Plastic Exposure Widens Urban Health Gaps in South Asia
Plastic has become an unavoidable part of everyday urban life across South Asia, particularly through food packaging, shopping bags, bottles, household products, and disposable materials. However, exposure to plastic and its associated contaminants is not equal across society. Low-income communities often depend more heavily on inexpensive plastic products and may repeatedly reuse containers intended for short-term use. At the same time, inadequate waste collection and uncontrolled disposal can increase contact with plastic debris, microplastics, and chemicals released from discarded or burned plastic. These conditions make socioeconomic status an important factor in determining both the level of exposure and the potential health risks.
People living in underserved urban areas may face several exposure pathways simultaneously. Communities located close to waste dumps, open drains, industrial sites, or informal recycling areas can encounter plastic contaminants through air, water, soil, and food. Waste collectors, informal recyclers, street workers, and individuals employed in small-scale industries may experience additional occupational exposure. Limited access to safer alternatives, poor housing conditions, lower environmental awareness, and inadequate municipal services can further increase vulnerability. Long-term exposure to plastic-associated chemicals and particles is increasingly being examined in relation to inflammation, oxidative stress, metabolic disturbances, respiratory problems, and other health concerns.
Prof. Dr. Audil Rashid, Group Leader of the Eco-Health Research Group at the University of Gujrat, emphasizes the importance of examining plastic pollution not only as an environmental problem but also as an issue of human exposure and health risk. Reducing these inequalities requires better waste-management systems, safer recycling practices, affordable alternatives to hazardous plastics, improved occupational protection, and greater public awareness. Effective fund management plays a significant role in plastic exposure analysis by ensuring adequate resources for field sampling, laboratory testing, exposure monitoring, and data analysis. It also strengthens health-risk assessment by supporting systematic evaluation of exposure pathways, vulnerable populations, and potential health outcomes. Research focusing on vulnerable urban populations can help identify high-risk exposure patterns and support policies that protect communities most affected by plastic pollution.
