Five missiles were fired from near the coastal city of Sinpo early Sunday morning. They traveled roughly 136 kilometers before hitting a target zone near an island. North Korean state media KCNA described the hits as dense and concentrated meaning the warheads did exactly what they were supposed to do.

Kim reportedly walked away satisfied. According to KCNA he told his defence scientists that their years of work had finally paid off and pushed them to keep going.

South Korea Was Not Happy

Seoul reacted quickly. The Blue House called the launches a provocation and demanded Pyongyang stop. North and South Korea have technically been at war since the 1950s. The Korean War ended with a ceasefire not a peace deal so the tension between the two countries never really went away. It just stays quiet most of the time.

The Bigger Picture Behind These Launches

This was the fourth missile launch North Korea carried out this month alone and the seventh so far this year. Earlier in the same month Pyongyang also tested an electromagnetic weapon alongside another cluster bomb warhead on a different missile. Analysts say North Korea is not just testing weapons randomly. It is trying to show the world it can fight a modern war.

A professor at Kyungnam University put it plainly. He said these tests show North Korea wants to hit targets more precisely over a wider area and with much more destruction. If these missiles get moved closer to the border South Korea and American military bases near Seoul could fall within range.

Britain came out and condemned the launches urging North Korea to come back to the table for real diplomacy. So far Pyongyang has not shown any interest in that direction.

Back in late March Kim made his position crystal clear. He said North Korea’s identity as a nuclear armed state cannot be reversed and that growing its nuclear deterrent is not optional. It is a national security requirement in his view.

Some experts also believe the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran has pushed Kim to double down on his own weapons program. Watching how that situation has played out may have confirmed for him that having a strong missile and nuclear program is the only protection that truly matters.
