RAF jets scrambled as suspected Russian bomber approaches UK airspace
Royal Air Force scrambles jets as tensions rise over suspected Russian aircraft near UK skies
Royal Air Force – (Web Desk) – Two fighter jets from the Royal Air Force, supported by a Voyager refueling aircraft, were deployed after an unidentified plane was spotted nearing British airspace on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. The aircraft, however, stayed outside the United Kingdom’s airspace, so no interception was required.
The development comes during rising tensions linked to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. Iran has reportedly carried out drone strikes on U.S. bases and energy sites in response to joint U.S.-Israeli military actions, prompting heightened alert levels.
Speaking to ITV News, an RAF spokesperson said Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon jets were sent as a precaution when the aircraft approached the monitored zone. He confirmed that no direct engagement was necessary since the plane did not enter the area of concern.
Although the spokesperson did not share details about the approaching aircraft, The Telegraph reported that it was a suspected Russian long-range bomber.

The incident comes amid increased Russian military activity in the region. Last week, UK Defense Secretary John Healey said the British Navy tracked two Russian spy submarines and one attack submarine in the North Atlantic Ocean.
Healey said Putin was trying to take advantage of the situation in the Middle East, describing him as “primary threat to UK security.”
