Algeria cuts ties UAE amid rising regional diplomatic tensions

Algeria’s foreign ministry said the UAE had crossed a line that could no longer be ignored. Officials described a pattern of hostile and provocative actions building up over recent years.

The ministry did not name a single incident behind the move. Instead, it said it had tried every possible way to save the relationship before giving up.

The UAE reacted with a calmer tone. Its foreign ministry said it hopes the break will only be temporary.

Abu Dhabi also spoke warmly about the Algerian people. It pointed to strong personal and cultural bonds, especially through Algerians living and working in the UAE.

Anwar Gargash, a top adviser to the UAE president, shared his thoughts online. He said real diplomacy needs clear communication, not hidden signals that others have to guess at.

He never mentioned Algeria by name. Still, many saw his comment as a direct response to the situation.

As part of the decision, Algeria gave the UAE’s ambassador just 48 hours to leave the country. The ambassador was called into the foreign ministry and informed in person.

This is not a sudden falling out. Tension between the two countries has been building for years, especially in Algerian media.

Several deep disagreements separate the two governments. Algeria strongly opposes any normalization with Israel, while the UAE signed the Abraham Accords back in 2020.

The two sides also disagree over Western Sahara. The UAE backs Morocco’s claim over the territory, while Algeria supports the Polisario Front’s push for independence.

Their rivalry has spread into the Sahel region too. The UAE has been building new partnerships there, even as Algeria’s ties with some neighboring countries weaken after recent coups.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune hinted at this rift last year. He praised Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar as close allies, while accusing one unnamed Gulf country of meddling in Algeria’s affairs.

Earlier this year, Algeria also began canceling an old air travel agreement with the UAE. That deal had been signed back in 2013.

For now, both countries seem far from patching things up. But the UAE’s calm response suggests it is not ready to give up on the relationship completely.
