Earthquake Shakes Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Sparks Brief Panic

ISLAMABAD: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck parts of Islamabad and nearby Rawalpindi on Monday, causing brief panic among residents.

According to the details, people in several areas reported feeling the ground shake for a few seconds, prompting many to step outside their homes and offices as a precaution.

The tremors created fear among citizens of twin cities, though the situation remained calm shortly afterwards.

Seismological authorities said the earthquake had a depth of 128 kilometres and its epicentre was located near the Tajikistan–Xinjiang border region.

Despite the noticeable tremors, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Relevant authorities said they are continuing to monitor the situation.

Earlier, on 27 April, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck near the Afghanistan–Tajikistan border, with tremors felt in Islamabad and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Swat, Shangla and Buner.

That quake occurred at a depth of 170 kilometres, while the United States Geological Survey recorded its magnitude at 5.1. No major damage was reported at the time.

Pakistan regularly experiences earthquakes due to its location at the meeting point of the Arabian, Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, making seismic activity a common occurrence in the region.
