Pakistan-Iran Gas Pipeline Project Still Under Consideration: Malik

Government Exploring Options To Advance Pak-Iran Gas Pipeline

Islamabad: (Web Desk) Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik stated that the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project is still being reviewed, while the issue remains under arbitration proceedings.

He said the government is committed to preserving the project and examining practical options for its implementation. Malik explained that the cost of gas supplied through the Iran-Pakistan pipeline is not significantly different from LNG imported from Qatar.

However, Pakistan already possesses the infrastructure needed for LNG imports, whereas importing Iranian gas would require billions of dollars in additional investment to build pipeline networks, increasing the overall project cost. He refrained from discussing the matter in greater detail due to ongoing legal proceedings but expressed optimism that Pakistan’s recent diplomatic engagement in the US-Iran conflict could help facilitate an out-of-court resolution.

The minister said Pakistan would pursue negotiations aimed at reaching a mutually beneficial agreement for all stakeholders. He further noted that if sanctions on Iran are lifted, the country could become a valuable source of both gas and oil for Pakistan, adding that the government will act in accordance with the nation’s best interests.
