Google Breaks Ground on Largest AI Hub Outside US in India

ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk): Tech giant Google has marked the ceremonial start of construction on its largest artificial intelligence hub outside the United States, launching a major project in Visakhapatnam, also known as Vizag.

The company had announced in October 2025 that it would invest $15 billion over five years to build the facility in the southeastern port city in Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Google’s Vice President for Global Infrastructure, Bikash Koley, described the project as a key milestone in the company’s long-term commitment to India’s digital growth.

He said the initiative would create a “full-stack AI ecosystem,” anchored by a gigawatt-scale data center campus designed to meet the massive computational demands of modern AI systems, including services like Gemini and Google Search.

State IT Minister Nara Lokesh welcomed the development, calling it a significant step toward transforming Vizag into a leading AI and deep-tech hub.

The project also includes plans to position Visakhapatnam as a major landing point for submarine internet cables connecting India to Singapore, enhancing global connectivity. Officials say this will diversify existing cable landings in Mumbai and Chennai, improving the resilience of India’s digital infrastructure.

Additionally, new fibre optic routes are expected to strengthen links between India and the global digital network.

Industry observers note that data centers are witnessing rapid global expansion, driven by the growing need to store vast amounts of data and support energy-intensive AI technologies. The Vizag project is being seen as a pivotal development for both India’s tech landscape and Google’s global AI ambitions.
