UAE Announces Exit from OPEC, OPEC+ Alliance

United Arab Emirates to Withdraw from OPEC and OPEC+ from 2026

Dubai: (Web Desk) – The United Arab Emirates has announced its decision to withdraw from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the broader OPEC+ alliance, with the exit scheduled to take effect from May 1, 2026.

According to the Emirates News Agency, the decision reflects a strategic shift in the country’s long-term energy and economic policy. OPEC, founded in 1960, includes major oil-producing nations such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and Kuwait, while OPEC+ also includes countries like Russia.

The UAE stated that the move aims to strengthen national energy interests, expand investment in domestic oil and energy production, and enhance flexibility in responding to global market demand. Officials also emphasized that the decision is based on a comprehensive review of current and future production capacity.

The withdrawal is expected to reduce OPEC membership to 11 countries and may influence global oil market dynamics, as OPEC collectively plays a major role in stabilizing oil prices and regulating supply.

OPEC+ was formed in 2016 to coordinate production cuts and stabilize global oil markets amid price fluctuations. Currently, OPEC members collectively account for a significant share of global crude oil supply and trade.

Despite leaving the organization, the UAE has reiterated its commitment to maintaining stable energy supplies and continuing cooperation in global energy markets.
