Google Begins Rolling Out Gemini AI on Android Auto, Replacing Google Assistant

The update requires Android Auto versions 15.6 or 15.7, and is currently available to beta users.

ISLAMABAD: Google’s next-generation artificial intelligence system, Gemini, has officially begun appearing on Android Auto, marking a major step toward replacing Google Assistant in vehicles.

According to reports from early users and 9to5Google, Gemini is now showing up on car dashboards for select users, introducing more natural conversations and improved in-car assistance. Google has not yet released an official statement about the rollout, but it appears to be happening gradually through a server-side update rather than a downloadable patch.

The update requires Android Auto versions 15.6 or 15.7, and is currently available to beta users.

Smarter, More Conversational Experience

Gemini brings a new level of interaction to Android Auto, allowing users to have fluid, real-time conversations with the AI. Drivers can interrupt responses, ask follow-up questions, and receive context-aware replies — all without taking their hands off the wheel.

The AI is integrated with popular Google apps like Google Home and Google Keep, enabling users to perform hands-free tasks such as creating grocery lists, checking reminders, or finding nearby stores while driving.

However, some early users have reported that certain features, such as contact nicknames, are not yet working properly, suggesting that Google is still refining the system.

Enhanced Navigation with Gemini in Google Maps

In addition to Android Auto, Google has also upgraded Google Maps with Gemini-powered features. Drivers can now use natural language to ask about nearby places, report traffic conditions, or get more detailed directions.

Together, these updates represent a significant shift in Google’s approach to in-car technology. By integrating Gemini’s generative AI across platforms, the company aims to deliver a smarter, safer, and more conversational driving experience.
