Sindh Govt Appoints New SBCA Chief After Lyari Tragedy; Announces Compensation for Victims

The minister also called for the blocking of passports of those involved in illegal construction activities

KARACHI: The Sindh government, led by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has removed Ishaq Khoro from his position as Director General of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) following the tragic building collapse in Lyari, which claimed 27 lives. In his place, Shah Mir Bhutto has been appointed as the new Director General of SBCA.

In response to the devastating incident, the Sindh government has announced financial compensation of one million rupees for the families of each of the victims. Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani stated that the affected families will not be left alone in their time of grief.

Ghani acknowledged limitations in the current legal framework, saying that existing laws do not allow for strict punishment of the builder responsible for the collapse. However, he confirmed that the government is working to amend SBCA regulations to introduce tougher penalties and oversight to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The minister also called for the blocking of passports of those involved in illegal construction activities and has directed the Karachi Commissioner to submit a comprehensive report identifying dangerous buildings across the city.
