Canadian-Pakistani Arrested for Alleged Terrorist Plot in New York City
Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a 20-year-old Pakistani living in Canada, has been arrested for allegedly planning a terrorist attack in New York City around October 7. This date is notably one year after Hamas’ attack on Israel.
Pakistan-Shahzeb Khan faces a charge of attempting to provide material support to ISIS, which could result in a maximum prison sentence of 20 years if he is convicted. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge based on U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.
The U.S. Department of Justice reported that Khan intended to carry out a mass shooting at a Jewish center in Brooklyn. His plan included traveling from Canada to New York City, where he allegedly sought to acquire AR-style assault rifles, ammunition, and other supplies. Khan began expressing support for ISIS on social media in November 2023, sharing propaganda and engaging in encrypted communications with others.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland noted that Khan’s goal was to target Jewish individuals, while FBI Director Christopher Wray praised the FBI and its partners for thwarting his plan. Khan had identified October 7 and October 11 as strategic dates for the attack, with October 7 marking the anniversary of the Hamas attack and October 11 coinciding with the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur.
