Russian Drone Hits Kyiv-Warsaw Train Near Polish Border

ISLAMABAD: (News Desk) – A Russian drone struck a passenger train travelling from Kyiv to Warsaw on Sunday near Ukraine’s border with NATO member Poland, causing no casualties, officials from both countries said.

Ukrainian authorities said the drone hit the train’s locomotive around two kilometres (1.2 miles) from the Polish border. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of deliberately targeting the train as part of a wider wave of attacks on the country’s western regions.

“All necessary services are working near the Polish-Ukrainian border in Volyn, where the Russians deliberately burned a train locomotive and damaged a gas station in a drone strike,” Zelensky said.

He said Russian forces had also targeted railway and energy infrastructure as well as civilian buildings across Ukraine.

Polish authorities confirmed that another drone struck near the Dorohusk-Yagodyn border crossing. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said one drone hit near the crossing while the other struck the passenger train.

“We are treating these events with the utmost seriousness. The situation is being monitored on an ongoing basis,” Kierwinski said.

Polish rail operator PKP Intercity said the Kyiv-Warsaw train was carrying 206 passengers. No casualties were reported, while the service was delayed by more than six hours due to the incident and border checks before continuing its journey to Warsaw.

Zelensky said the attacks underscored the need to prevent Russia’s war from expanding beyond Ukraine, adding that Ukrainians were fighting to stop the conflict from spreading further into Europe.

The strikes came days after US envoys travelled to Moscow and Kyiv as Washington sought to revive negotiations aimed at ending Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II.

At least two civilians were also killed in Russian strikes across Ukraine on Sunday, according to Ukrainian authorities.
