‘Safe water guarantees a secure life. The Sindh Government with the support of USAID has fulfilled its promise to provide clean water to the communities in Jacobabad. Now, it’s the citizens’ duty to ensure that this facility is sustained,” expressed Syed Muhammad Shakaib DG-Works Municipal Services Development Program.
During the conference, Maqbool Ahmed Rahu, Chief Executive of HANDS- WASH and Education Department, stated, “HANDS has been striving for many years to provide clean water at the doorsteps of Jacobabad city residents, with the support of the Government of Sindh and USAID Pakistan. HANDS is also raising awareness about the use of clean water countrywide.”
Vice Chancellor of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University of Technology and Skills Development, Mr. Rasool Bux Mahar, said, “Clean water is now a dream in third-world countries. In Sindh, pollution, inadequate sanitation, and water contamination pose significant health risks to residents. Waterborne diseases, respiratory ailments, and malnutrition are prevalent due to poor environmental conditions.
Kamran Ansari, Director of US-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies-Water Mehran University, noted, “Considering the climate change situation, we must strategize to handle water and sanitation issues in our surrounding areas. Given the climate change situation, educational institutions have now incorporated water, sanitation, and personal hygiene topics into their curriculum, and awareness is gradually being strengthened across the country.”
Dr Hina Hussain Kazmi CoP- USAID Water Governance for Sindh Activity concluded the conference by saying; ‘By aligning policy reforms, fostering public-private partnership, and advancing digitalization, USAID-Water Governance for Sindh Activity is improving Municipal Committee Jacobabad WASH service functionality. Emphasizing community awareness and behavior changes in WASH practices will help reduce waterborne diseases and boost public trust through effective municipal service awareness and complaint mechanisms.’
USAID representative Mr Saqib Khan presented the vote of thanks in the end with a positive message saying that the discussions held today have illuminated pathways towards innovative solutions and reinforced the importance of partnerships.
On this occasion, children presented tableaus about water and sanitation, and drew posters to raise awareness on multiple aspects of ‘Water for Peace’. Various stalls displayed the projects on water made by WGS school students, NGOs/CSOs working on WASH and universities researching and developing projects on water, sanitation and hygiene. A large number of community members, including men, women, and children, dignitaries, social activists, and significant members of society attended the conference.
