Ukraine Drone Strike Kills 12 in Russia’s Tatarstan

Ukraine and Russia Trade Deadly Long-Range Strikes Amid Escalation

MOSCOW: (News Desk) – A Ukrainian drone attack on Russia’s central Tatarstan region has killed at least 12 people and injured 39 others, according to regional authorities, making it one of the deadliest single attacks carried out by Kyiv during the more than four-year war.

The strike targeted the city of Nizhnekamsk, located more than 1,000 kilometres from Ukraine. Tatarstan is a major energy-producing region and is home to several important oil and industrial facilities that have increasingly been targeted in Ukrainian attacks.

Unverified footage circulating on social media appeared to show a large column of dark smoke rising from an industrial facility near Nizhnekamsk. The reports could not be independently verified.

Both Russia and Ukraine have intensified long-range drone and missile strikes in recent months, with the escalation contributing to a rise in civilian casualties, according to the United Nations.

Deadly Strikes Reported on Both Sides

In Ukraine, Russian forces carried out a heavy artillery bombardment in the northeastern Kharkiv region, killing five people in the village of Bugaivka, local authorities said.

The regional prosecutor’s office said the attack struck a residential area in Chuhuiv district, damaging and destroying several homes. Images released by officials showed a building reduced to rubble.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air-defence systems had intercepted 456 Ukrainian drones overnight, although Moscow did not provide details about how many drones may have reached their intended targets.

Tatarstan authorities had earlier described the attack on the region as a large-scale drone assault, while Ukraine’s air force said Russia had launched 126 drones during its overnight attack on Ukraine.

Elsewhere, Russian officials reported that a woman was killed in a Ukrainian attack in the border region of Belgorod. In Ukraine’s frontline Kherson region, officials said a man was killed when a Russian drone struck a taxi.

The latest attacks underline the continuing escalation in long-range strikes by both sides, with civilian areas increasingly caught in the crossfire.
