TOKRYO: (Web Desk) – A powerful earthquake shook Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido early Monday morning, according to both Japan Meteorological Agency and United States Geological Survey. The quake, now measured at magnitude 6.2 after revision, struck at 5:23 am local time at a depth of 83 kilometers in southern Hokkaido. Authorities confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued, and initial assessments suggest limited damage due to the area’s relatively low population, located about 200 kilometers from Sapporo.
However, officials cautioned that regions experiencing intense shaking may face hazards such as falling rocks and possible landslides. Experts also warned that similar earthquakes could occur over the next week. Earlier the same day, a separate magnitude 5.0 quake was recorded offshore south of Hokkaido.

These tremors follow closely after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake near Iwate Prefecture, which injured several people and caused noticeable shaking as far as Tokyo. That earlier quake also triggered moderate tsunami waves along northern coastlines. Authorities have since warned that the likelihood of a significantly stronger earthquake—potentially magnitude 8 or higher—remains elevated.
Japan, positioned along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences frequent earthquakes, with around 1,500 recorded annually. The nation continues to remain cautious, especially after the devastating 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, which caused widespread destruction and loss of life.
