Russia Kyiv Attack: Nine Killed as Missile Strikes Wound Dozens Across Capital

The strikes came just hours after Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko sounded the alarm. He warned residents on Telegram about an incoming ballistic missile threat and urged everyone to head straight to shelters.

Emergency crews later confirmed the attack had spread across five separate districts of Kyiv. Among the injured were four children, adding another painful layer to an already grim night.

Journalists on the ground described a chaotic scene. Reporters from AFP said they heard more than ten explosions, one after another, echoing through the city as the strikes continued.

The Darnytskyi district bore the heaviest damage. Officials there reported seven deaths and fourteen injuries, along with wrecked buildings and burned-out vehicles scattered across the area.

Solomianskyi district also suffered a direct hit. A missile struck a five-storey residential building, killing two people and injuring eight others who lived nearby.

Rescue teams worked through the night pulling survivors from collapsed structures. In total, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said crews saved 105 people from the rubble across the affected zones.

This latest strike is part of a troubling pattern. Both Russia and Ukraine have ramped up long-range attacks in recent months, each side pushing harder as the war grinds toward its fifth year.

Ukraine’s counterstrikes are partly strategic. Kyiv hopes the pressure will eventually force Moscow back to the negotiating table after more than four years of relentless fighting.

The human cost keeps climbing. United Nations figures show June was the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since the early days of the invasion back in 2022.

Meanwhile, Russia is dealing with its own fallout. E-commerce giant Wildberries reported a fire at one of its Volgograd logistics sites following an overnight strike, the latest in a string of attacks on its facilities.

Ukrainian officials claim these Wildberries warehouses aren’t just storing packages. They allege the sites are also being used to store drone parts and support Russian military operations.

The timing of this attack is notable. It follows closely on the heels of a high-profile meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump earlier this week.

After that meeting, Zelensky said something significant had shifted. He claimed Trump had agreed to allow licensed production of Patriot missile systems specifically to support Ukraine’s air defense.

But Trump struck a more cautious tone on Friday. He said the US would need to move carefully before finalizing any such licensing agreement for Patriot missile production.

For now, Kyiv residents are left counting losses and rebuilding what they can. The attack stands as another painful reminder of how far the war is from any real resolution.

As rescue operations continue and officials assess the full scope of damage, the international community watches closely, waiting to see whether diplomatic efforts can finally slow the violence.
