Rawalpindi ATC Sentences Imaan Mazari and Hadi Chattha to Ten Years
Court Rejects Defence Plea Delays Verdict in Imaan Mazari Case
RAWALPINDI: (Mudassar Iqbal) – An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi on Thursday sentenced lawyer and human rights activist Imaan Mazari and her husband, Hadi Ali Chattha, to 10 years in prison each in a case involving allegations of obstructing official duties and creating a security risk.
The case was registered at Aabpara Police Station and relates to alleged interference in state affairs during the visit of an international cricket team to Pakistan in October 2024.
According to the reported verdict, the court awarded both lawyers 10-year prison terms under three separate legal provisions. The case centres on allegations that their actions created a security risk during the international team’s visit.
Defence Seeks Postponement of Verdict
Before the announcement of the verdict, the defence requested a delay, maintaining that petitions relating to the case were still pending before the Supreme Court and the high court.
Defence lawyer Aimal Mandokhail argued that the court should defer its decision until the pending petitions had been decided.
“The decision should be postponed until the petitions pending before the Supreme Court and high court are decided,” Mandokhail told the court.
He further maintained that the verdict should not be announced while the defence applications remained under consideration. He also informed the court that a separate application seeking the transfer of the case was pending before the high court.
Despite the defence’s objections and request for postponement, the Rawalpindi ATC proceeded with the announcement of the verdict and sentenced Mazari and Chattha to 10 years in prison each.
