Peshawar School Roof Collapse Leaves Families Mourning Their Lost Children

Grieving parents, a detained school owner and a long history of unsafe buildings put the spotlight on school safety in Pakistan.

Peshawar – (Staff Reporter/Web Desk0 – Peshawar school roof collapse has left many families in deep pain. On Friday, dozens of people gathered outside the school to remember the children who died when the building came down a day earlier.

Officials say old and weak infrastructure was behind the tragedy. The building simply could not hold, and young students were inside when it happened.

One grieving father showed a photo on his mobile phone to a news agency. It was a picture of his little daughter, dressed in red and gold. She never came home from school.

Another parent, Asadullah, said he lost his son, his nephew and three other close relatives. His pain was clear as he spoke about the children. He said they were good students who often finished at the top of their classes.

He also said they enjoyed going to school. Every morning, they left home happy and full of energy.

Residents and rescuers described confusion and fear after the collapse. People ran toward the building and started pulling children out from under the rubble with their own hands.

A man named Sohail said the news first reached his home through his niece. She had escaped the building and ran back to tell the family what had happened. Everyone began screaming in panic.

Sohail rushed to the school right away. He saw around 10 to 15 children trapped under the rubble, with debris piled up to their necks. He said people worked fast and pulled them out.

Emergency services later shared images from the site. Rescue workers in bright vests could be seen moving rubble, broken concrete and dirt, searching for anyone still stuck.

A senior official in Peshawar said early reports point to weak infrastructure as the cause of the roof collapse. He also confirmed that the school owner has been detained.

The official asked not to be named because he was not allowed to speak to the media.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also reacted to the news. In a post on X, he said he felt deep sorrow and grief over the loss of precious lives.

Sadly, this is not a new problem. Building collapses are common in Pakistan, mostly because of poor safety standards and low-quality construction materials.

Earlier this year, in June, more than a dozen children died when a roof fell at a tutoring centre in the eastern city of Lahore.

In 2025, a five-storey building collapsed in the Lyari area of Karachi. That accident killed 27 people and injured 10 more.

For many families, the questions now are simple. Why were children sitting in a building that could not stay up? Who was supposed to check it?

Many people hope the Peshawar school roof collapse will push the authorities to inspect old school buildings and repair unsafe ones. They want this done before another family loses a child.
