PECA Amendment Act 2025 Challenged in Lahore High Court
Petitioner Seeks to Declare PICA Amendment Act Unconstitutional
LAHORE: The Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) Amendment Act 2025 has been challenged in the Lahore High Court. The petition, filed by journalist Jafar Bin Yaar through his lawyer, names the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and other relevant authorities as respondents.
In his petition, Jafar Bin Yaar argues that PECA has historically been used as a tool to silence dissent, and the recent amendments, which introduce harsher penalties, will further curtail what little freedom of expression remains in the country. The petitioner contends that the PECA Amendment Act is unconstitutional and in direct violation of the fundamental right to freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution.
