Pakistan Calls on US, Iran to Show Restraint and Uphold Islamabad MoU
Pakistan said it remained ready to continue playing a mediatory role
Islamabad: (Special Reporter)- Pakistan has expressed deep concern over renewed tensions in the Middle East following overnight exchanges of strikes between the United States and Iran, urging both sides to exercise restraint and return to dialogue.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Foreign Office said that another conflict in the region would serve no party’s interests and could further undermine peace and stability.
“Pakistan calls on all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from any actions that may further undermine regional peace and stability,” the statement said, adding that sustained engagement, dialogue and diplomacy remained the only viable path towards lasting peace.
The Foreign Office urged all sides to honour their commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, describing the agreement as an important foundation for mutual respect, understanding and shared prosperity in the region.
The statement came after tensions escalated following reported Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. The incidents were followed by extensive US strikes on Iranian targets, while Iran reportedly carried out retaliatory attacks on targets in Gulf countries.
Pakistan said it remained ready to continue playing a mediatory role between Washington and Tehran. Islamabad has been involved in efforts to reduce tensions between the two countries and has encouraged both sides to pursue diplomatic engagement.
The Islamabad MoU, signed after earlier exchanges of strikes, had provided a 60-day framework for negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and related matters. It also called for a complete halt to military operations on all fronts.
However, the latest escalation has raised concerns over the future of the ceasefire arrangement. At a Nato summit in Ankara, US President Donald Trump reportedly said the ceasefire was over and warned of further action against Iran.
Pakistan reiterated that peace in the Middle East could only be achieved through restraint, dialogue and adherence to agreed commitments.
