NPT Review Conference 2026 Failed — Three Times in a Row, and the World Should Be Worried
NPT – (Web Desk) – The NPT review conference 2026 failed on Friday, ending four weeks of negotiations without any agreement. Vietnam’s Do Hung Viet, who led the conference, confirmed that talks could not reach a shared outcome — and no final document would be put forward.
This is not the first time. The same thing happened in 2015 and again in 2022. Three failures in a row is a serious warning sign for the future of global nuclear safety.
Experts say the treaty still exists — but its power and credibility are getting weaker each time talks break down. The final text kept getting shorter, softer, and less connected to real-world threats like Iran and North Korea.
Key issues were quietly removed from the draft. There was no mention of North Korea’s nuclear programme. No call for US-Russia talks on a replacement for the expired New START treaty. Even language about Iran’s nuclear violations was watered down and left unresolved.
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute reports that nine countries together hold 12,241 nuclear warheads. Russia and the United States control 90% of them. Some nations are not just keeping their weapons — they are building more.
Advocates for disarmament say most countries came to the table in good faith. But a small group of nuclear-armed states, they argue, are blocking progress, growing their arsenals, and pushing the world toward danger.
The NPT has been a cornerstone of global peace since 1970. But without successful reviews, its ability to hold nations accountable keeps fading.
