Maulana Fazlur Rehman Stresses Parliamentary Supremacy, Calls for Institutions to Remain Within Constitutional Limits

Constitution and the law clearly define the jurisdiction and powers of every institution, JUI-F said.

ISLAMABAD: (Mudassar Iqbal) – Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, while addressing Parliament, emphasized the importance of constitutional supremacy and parliamentary authority, stating that all state institutions must operate within their defined constitutional boundaries.

The veteran politician said that he and his party respect the armed forces, state institutions, and the establishment, but stressed that the Constitution and the law clearly define the jurisdiction and powers of every institution.

“If institutions remain within their constitutional limits, they are the crown on our heads,” he said. “However, if they become a party to political affairs, influence electoral outcomes, or interfere in democratic processes, then political forces have the right to respond and raise their concerns.”

Referring to recent political developments, Maulana Fazlur Rehman alleged that electoral results in certain regions had been altered, arguing that such matters raise legitimate questions regarding institutional neutrality in politics.

The JUI-F chief reiterated that he has consistently supported national institutions whenever they performed their constitutional duties. He recalled extending support during periods of regional tensions and also backing Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, including its reported mediation initiatives between Iran and the United States.

“I will always appreciate good work,” he said. “But if mistakes are made, we cannot remain silent. Parliament has both the right and the responsibility to discuss such matters.”

Highlighting the principle of parliamentary supremacy, Fazlur Rehman stated that Parliament is the supreme representative institution of the people and has the authority to debate and scrutinize all matters of public importance, including the conduct of state institutions.

He noted that national institutions are funded through budgets approved by Parliament and argued that elected representatives therefore have the responsibility to ensure accountability and proper use of public resources.

Calling for an independent and empowered legislature, he urged that Parliament be allowed to function freely without restrictions on debate or criticism.

“We are not ridiculing anyone or using inappropriate language,” he said. “We are simply placing our concerns regarding policies, conduct, and decisions on the parliamentary record.”

In his speech, Fazlur Rehman also referred to past statements made by political leaders, urging critics of parliamentary debate to reflect on their own political positions and remarks made in previous years regarding civil-military relations.

The address sparked discussion across political circles, with observers viewing it as a strong reaffirmation of parliamentary oversight, constitutional governance, and democratic accountability.
