Lt Gen Subramani CDS Appointment Marks a New Era in India's Military Leadership
India – (Web Desk) – India has a new Chief of Defence Staff. The government has officially confirmed the Lt Gen Subramani CDS appointment, replacing General Anil Chauhan, who completes his tenure on May 30, 2026.
Lieutenant-General (retd) NS Raja Subramani will take charge as the next CDS. He will also serve as Secretary in the Department of Military Affairs under the Government of India.
Before this role, Subramani served as the Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat since September 2024. He previously held the position of Vice Chief of the Army Staff and also commanded the Central Command as its General Officer Commanding-in-Chief.
Throughout his distinguished military career, he has received some of India’s top military honours — the PVSM, AVSM, Sena Medal, and VSM — a clear reflection of his dedication and service to the nation.

As CDS, Lt Gen Subramani will serve as the principal military adviser to the government and play a key role in enhancing jointness and integration among the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

On the naval front, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan is set to become India’s new Navy Chief. He currently serves as the Western Naval Commander based in Mumbai and will officially take charge on May 31, 2026. His tenure is expected to run until December 31, 2028.
Swaminathan joined the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, and has built deep expertise in Communication and Electronic Warfare. He is a graduate of the National Defence Academy, the College of Naval Warfare, and the United States Naval War College in Rhode Island.
Both appointments signal a strong and experienced new chapter for India’s armed forces leadership.
