PESHAWAR: (Web Desk) – The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has formally urged the federal authorities to intervene immediately to ensure the uninterrupted supply of wheat and flour to the province amid reported transportation restrictions in Punjab.
In an official letter sent on Sunday, the provincial administration warned that continued obstacles in the movement of wheat and flour from Punjab could lead to a serious shortage crisis in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the communication, the province requires nearly 5.3 million metric tons of wheat annually, while local production stands at only around 1.6 million metric tons, making it heavily reliant on supplies from other provinces.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government also called for the immediate release of wheat-loaded vehicles allegedly stopped in Punjab, arguing that restrictions on inter-provincial movement violate Article 151 of Pakistan’s Constitution, which guarantees free trade and commerce among provinces.
Officials further requested the federal government to ensure continuous wheat supply through Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) to prevent disruptions in essential food availability.
The letter warned that the reported restrictions were already beginning to impact the province’s strategic wheat reserves, raising concerns about food security, market stability and the possible rise in flour prices.
