Italy misses World Cup; Gravina and Buffon resign

Rome: (Web Desk) – Italy suffered a historic setback in football as the national team failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the third consecutive time, prompting major resignations within the country’s football leadership.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) chief, Gabriele Gravina, stepped down following the team’s defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup play-off final. Italy, a four-time World Cup champion, had pinned hopes on the match to secure their place on football’s biggest stage.

Adding to the fallout, legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who was serving as head of the delegation, also resigned. Buffon, a member of Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning squad, expressed disappointment, saying that the team’s primary goal had been to return to the World Cup—an objective they could not achieve.

The resignations mark a moment of reflection for Italian football, which has now missed three consecutive World Cups, sparking calls for reform and a strategic reset at both the national team and federation levels.
