FIFA Allows Afghan Refugee Women Team Global Entry

Historic Move: Afghan Women Refugees Get Global Football Platform

KABUL: (Web Desk) – FIFA has taken a landmark step by allowing a women’s football team made up of Afghan refugees to participate in international competitions.

The team, known as Afghan Women United, was formed after Afghan female players were forced to flee the country following the Taliban’s return to power nearly five years ago. Now, they have officially been granted recognition on the global stage.

During a FIFA Council meeting held in Vancouver, Canada, an amendment to the organization’s rules was approved, enabling the refugee squad to compete under exceptional circumstances. FIFA exercised its authority to formally register the team and grant it the status of Afghanistan’s women’s national side.

This decision marks the first time the team will participate as an officially recognized national team in international football. While they will not be eligible for qualification in the 2027 Women’s World Cup, they will have the opportunity to compete in qualifiers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised the development, calling it a proud moment and emphasizing FIFA’s commitment to supporting teams that face barriers in international participation.
