Wasim Akram – (Staff Reporter/Web Desk) – Wasim Akram Imran Khan fair treatment has become a hot topic after the legendary pacer spoke out for his former captain. Akram asked the government to treat Imran Khan the same way it has treated other politicians in the past.
The two men shared the field during Pakistan’s golden cricket era. Akram said he still misses his old captain, both as a friend and as a mentor. He admitted the team hasn’t even seen a picture of Khan in three years.
Imran Khan, now 73, has been behind bars since August 2023. He was Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 to 2022 before losing power in a no-confidence vote. Since then, he has faced several court cases, which he and his party call politically motivated.
Akram shared his thoughts on the podcast Old Boys, New Balls, hosted alongside former England captain Ian Botham. He thanked the group of international cricket captains who recently signed a petition asking for Khan’s release.
He said the whole country stands behind their former leader. Akram added that he hopes, God willing, Khan will walk free soon.
This isn’t the first time former cricketers have raised their voice for Khan. Just weeks earlier, twenty-one former international captains renewed their appeal to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. They asked for proper medical care for Khan, in line with the Supreme Court’s own orders.
The Supreme Court had stepped in on August 18. A three-member bench directed jail officials to move Khan to Shifa Hospital for a full medical check-up within two days.
However, things didn’t go exactly as ordered. Khan was instead taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, known as PIMS. Doctors from Shifa International Hospital were also present during the visit.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar shared more details about the visit. He said Khan’s sister and personal doctors were present throughout the examination.
A team of specialists checked on Khan’s health. This included an eye doctor, a heart specialist, and a general physician. After the check-up, officials declared Khan medically fit.
Khan’s party wasn’t satisfied with how the hospital transfer was handled. PTI later filed a contempt petition in the Supreme Court, claiming the court’s original order wasn’t followed properly.
Khan built his early fame as Pakistan’s World Cup-winning captain back in 1992. Akram was one of the key players on that same historic team.
Their bond from those cricket days still runs deep. Akram’s recent comments show that many of Khan’s old teammates haven’t forgotten him, even years after he left the sport for politics.
For now, Khan remains in custody as his legal battles continue. His supporters, including his former teammates, keep hoping for a turn of events that brings him home.
