Pakistan, China Pledge to Enhance Defence Cooperation, Combat Terrorism

A story from  The Diplomat

A Chinese military delegation led by General Li Qiaoming visited Pakistan on August 26, meeting with top officials, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir. However, the visit coincided with a wave of terrorism in Balochistan Province, where the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) carried out coordinated attacks, killing at least 73 people.

The attacks occurred on the 18th anniversary of Nawab Akbar Bugti’s death, a Baloch nationalist who was killed in a military raid in 2006. The BLA has been fighting for independence since 2006, and the recent attacks were the most severe in magnitude.

The Chinese delegation’s visit and the timing of the attacks have raised concerns about Pakistan’s ability to protect Chinese interests in the region. The BLA has targeted Chinese workers and projects in the past, citing China’s affiliation with the Pakistani military.

The visit’s timing has been criticized, with some arguing that it perpetuates the perception that China supports the Pakistani military’s policies. The failure of Pakistani intelligence agencies to detect the attacks has also been questioned.
