Fatima Zahra Wins Pakistan’s Historic Commonwealth Games Boxing Medal
The 22-year-old delivered an outstanding performance, earning a unanimous 5-0 victory.
ISLAMABAD: (Sports Desk) – Pakistani boxer Fatima Zahra created history by securing the country’s first-ever boxing medal at the Commonwealth Games after defeating New Zealand’s Jordan Wilson in the women’s 60kg quarterfinal.
The 22-year-old delivered an outstanding performance, earning a unanimous 5-0 victory. Four judges scored the contest 29-28 in her favour, while the fifth awarded her a dominant 30-27 score, confirming her place in the semifinals and guaranteeing at least a bronze medal.
Following her historic win, Fatima Zahra expressed her determination to go even further in the competition.
“This is our first step, and we are hoping to win the gold medal as well,” she said after the bout.
Fatima will now face Canada’s Marie-Bathoul Al-Ahmadieh in Friday’s semifinal, with the winner advancing to the gold medal match.
Elsewhere, Pakistan’s Qudratullah was defeated by Northern Ireland’s Jude Gallagher in the men’s 60kg contest. In athletics, Mohammad Ismail finished 41st among 46 runners in the men’s 400m heats, while swimmer Hamza Asif placed 46th out of 70 competitors in the men’s 50m butterfly heats, ending his campaign before the semifinals.
