Solangi Advocates for Urban Beautification and Quality Construction on Shahrah-e-Faisal
KARACHI: In a key meeting held at ABAD House today, Abdul Rasheed Solangi, Director General of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), discussed various issues surrounding the construction industry with representatives from the Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD). The meeting was attended by ABAD Chairman Hassan Bakshy, Senior Vice Chairman Afzal Hameed, Vice Chairman Tarique Aziz, and Chairman of the Southern Region, Owais Thanvi.
A primary focus of the meeting was the progress made in tackling illegal construction activities across Karachi. DG SBCA Solangi shared data on actions taken against unauthorized buildings over the past six years, revealing that between 2018 and 2024, 8,171 buildings were targeted in operations. He highlighted the breakdown of these actions by year: 1,150 cases in 2018, 1,220 in 2019, 976 in 2020, 1,308 in 2021, 1,142 in 2022, 892 in 2023, and 1,784 in 2024. Solangi assured ABAD representatives that SBCA is actively conducting daily operations to curb illegal construction across Karachi and the wider Sindh province.
In a bid to improve transparency, DG SBCA instructed ABAD to implement QR codes on all newly constructed buildings. This measure is expected to provide easy access to relevant data regarding building permits, construction approvals, and regulatory compliance.
Solangi also emphasized the importance of incorporating sustainable and eco-friendly practices into construction projects. He directed ABAD to ensure that green energy solutions, such as solar power systems, are installed in buildings. Additionally, the DG SBCA called for improved cleanliness around construction sites, urging the removal of debris from roads to avoid obstruction and maintain public hygiene.
On the topic of urban beautification, Solangi discussed the Sindh Government’s efforts to enhance the aesthetic appeal of Shahrah-e-Faisal. He urged ABAD to extend these efforts to other areas, focusing on the improvement of building facades and overall urban landscapes. Solangi further stressed the need for high-quality construction materials to guarantee the durability and safety of buildings.
Hassan Bakshy, Chairman of ABAD, welcomed the initiative and acknowledged the need for greater cooperation between ABAD and SBCA. He emphasized that collaboration between builders and regulatory authorities is essential for the long-term development of a transparent, sustainable, and well-regulated construction sector in Karachi and beyond.
