Microsoft-backed OpenAI Restores ChatGPT Access Following Outage
OpenAI’s widely-used chatbot, ChatGPT, was restored after a brief outage impacted thousands of users, the company announced on Friday.
“ChatGPT issues have now been resolved,” OpenAI stated on its website. According to the company, most users regained access by 4:34 p.m. PT (0034 GMT on Saturday), though a few continued to experience issues until 5 p.m. (0100 GMT on Saturday).
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the disruption on X, noting that the platform was down for 30 minutes. Accompanied by a frown emoji, he commented, “We are much, much better at reliability than we used to be, but clearly more work in front of us.”
Outage-tracking site Downdetector.com reported that ChatGPT was unavailable for roughly half an hour, affecting over 19,403 users as of 7:13 p.m. ET (0013 GMT on Saturday).
Since its November 2022 debut, ChatGPT has amassed a weekly active user base of 250 million. OpenAI’s valuation has soared to $157 billion from $14 billion in 2021, with annual revenue reaching $3.6 billion—far surpassing Altman’s initial forecasts.
