Belgium Rally to Earn Draw Against Egypt in Opener
Lukaku Inspires Belgium Comeback as Egypt Settle for Point
WASHINGTON: (Web Desk) – Belgium and Egypt shared the points in a 1-1 draw in their opening FIFA World Cup Group G clash on Monday, as a second-half Belgian equalizer denied Egypt a historic victory.
Egypt made a bright start in Seattle and took the lead through Emam Ashour, whose well-struck effort found the bottom corner and left Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with no chance. The goal marked only the second time Egypt have led a World Cup match.
The Pharaohs held their advantage into the second half, but Belgium increased the pressure after the break. Kevin De Bruyne came close to leveling the score when his free-kick struck the outside of the post, while Mohamed Salah nearly doubled Egypt’s lead before Courtois produced a crucial save.
Belgium coach Rudi Garcia introduced Romelu Lukaku in the 65th minute, a move that quickly changed the game. Moments later, Thomas Meunier delivered a dangerous cross into the box, and Lukaku’s presence forced defender Mohamed Hany into an own goal, bringing Belgium back on level terms.
Despite late efforts from both sides, neither team was able to find a winner, and the match ended 1-1.

The result extends Egypt’s wait for a first-ever World Cup victory. The seven-time African champions will now turn their attention to upcoming Group G fixtures against Iran and New Zealand as they continue their search for a breakthrough win on football’s biggest stage.
For Belgium, the draw means they remain without a victory in their last three World Cup matches. Veterans Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, and Romelu Lukaku will be expected to play key roles as the Red Devils pursue a deep run in what could be the final World Cup campaign for several members of their celebrated golden generation.
