Google limits Meta’s AI computing resources amid shortages
Computing shortages challenge Big Tech's AI ambitions

ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – Google has reportedly imposed new limits on Meta’s access to computing resources after being unable to meet the social media company’s growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) processing capacity, according to a Financial Times report.
The report said Meta requested additional computing power from Google to support its expanding AI initiatives. However, Google informed the company in March that it could not provide the required capacity because of limited computing resources.
The shortage reportedly delayed several of Meta’s internal AI projects. While other Google customers also experienced resource constraints, Meta was said to be the most affected due to its exceptionally high demand for AI infrastructure.
Following the reported restrictions, Meta instructed its employees to use AI tokens more efficiently. AI tokens are units that measure the amount of data processed by AI models and help determine computing usage.
Neither Google nor Meta immediately commented on the report, while Reuters said it could not independently verify the claims.

Industry experts say major technology companies are investing billions of dollars in new data centres and advanced AI chips, but surging global demand for artificial intelligence continues to outpace available computing capacity.
The report added that although Google Cloud has recorded strong revenue growth, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has acknowledged that shortages in computing resources have limited the company’s ability to expand further.
