Twitch Draws Privacy Backlash Over Amazon AI Training

SAN FRANCISCO: (News Desk) – Twitch is facing strong criticism from users after announcing that it will share user data with parent company Amazon to help train artificial intelligence models.

The livestreaming platform said users would have the option to opt out of the data-sharing arrangement. However, unless they choose to do so, Amazon will be able to use livestream audio, text, images and other content posted on Twitch for AI training across its platforms.

The move has triggered another debate over online privacy as technology companies increasingly seek vast amounts of user-generated content to develop and improve AI systems.

Twitch Chief Product Officer Mike Minton addressed the backlash during a live discussion on the platform following the announcement.

Minton acknowledged that the policy would be controversial, saying an opt-in system would likely result in very few users agreeing to participate. He also noted that data sharing is commonly enabled by default across major content platforms.

The comments did little to calm Twitch users, many of whom criticized the policy and questioned whether default participation could genuinely be considered consent.

One user responding to Twitch on X argued that automatically enrolling people in the programme did not amount to meaningful consent. Another called on the platform to compensate users if their content was being used to help develop AI systems.

The controversy comes as major technology companies increasingly incorporate publicly available and user-generated material into AI development.

Amazon and Twitch are not alone in facing scrutiny over such practices. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced last year that public comments posted on its platforms, excluding WhatsApp, would be used to train its AI systems unless users opted out.

The latest Twitch policy is therefore likely to add further pressure on technology companies to explain how user-generated content is collected, shared and used in the rapidly expanding AI industry.
