Stokes backs Harry Brook as England’s next Test captain
Harry Brook has Stokes' full support for captaincy
Stokes announced during the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge that he was stepping away from England duty, saying he had become “burnt out” after four years as captain.
England’s farewell to Stokes ended in disappointment as New Zealand secured a commanding 160-run victory to clinch the three-match series 2-1.
Brook, who already captains England’s white-ball sides and serves as Test vice-captain, is widely regarded as the leading candidate to take over the red-ball leadership.

Speaking after the match, Stokes said Brook’s appointment would be the “natural progression” and insisted there was no reason he should not become the next Test captain.
“If I were to be asked who I think should do it, I would be throwing my 100 percent support behind Harry Brook,” Stokes said.
The 35-year-old also reflected on his partnership with England head coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key, saying the team had experienced both remarkable highs and difficult lows during the Bazball era.
Stokes confirmed he intends to continue playing county cricket for Durham but ruled out making a return for next year’s Ashes series against Australia, insisting his international retirement was final.
