Hundreds of Matric Students Barred From Exam for One Reason

"This kind of strictness could cost students an entire academic year," said one concerned parent.

ISLAMABAD: Hundreds of students were barred from appearing in the Matriculation examination in Lahore on Monday after they arrived late at their respective examination centres. The annual exam is being conducted by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Lahore.

According to eyewitnesses, the entrance gates at centres, including the one on Lawrence Road, were closed at exactly 9:00 AM — the scheduled start time of the paper. Several candidates who arrived moments later were not allowed to enter.

Parents of affected students said that their children were delayed due to heavy overnight rain, which continued into the morning, severely disrupting traffic and daily life across the city. Many appealed to the board to consider such emergencies and allow a grace period of at least five minutes for late arrivals.

“This kind of strictness could cost students an entire academic year,” said one concerned parent.

Despite growing criticism, BISE Lahore defended its policy, stating that the reporting time for all exams is clearly communicated in advance — 8:00 AM — and that no student is permitted to enter the examination hall after 9:00 AM under any circumstances.

The incident has sparked debate among students, parents, and educators, with many calling for more flexible policies in cases of genuine emergencies such as natural disruptions.
