ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reappointed Mohammad Sadiq as its Special Representative for Afghanistan, aiming to improve strained relations between the two countries. Sadiq’s primary challenge will be resolving the ongoing tension, particularly over cross-border militancy linked to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which continues to destabilize Pakistan.
Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government have been tense since 2021, with Pakistan accusing Afghanistan of harboring TTP militants. Despite Afghanistan’s offers to mediate, Pakistan remains firm in its stance not to engage in talks with “terrorists.”
Sadiq, a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience in Afghanistan, faces a difficult task. The Afghan Taliban’s refusal to take direct action against the TTP, alongside their growing relations with regional powers like Russia and China, complicates efforts for peace. Furthermore, economic issues such as trade restrictions and visa policies have exacerbated tensions.
