New Zealand celebrated a remarkable sporting weekend on Monday, marked by three significant victories: the Women’s T20 World Cup, a rare Test win in India, and triumph in the America’s Cup sailing competition.
“It was a weekend that just kept delivering, destined to be remembered as one of the greats,” reported the news site Stuff.
“And the All Blacks weren’t even playing.”
On Saturday, Emirates Team New Zealand secured a convincing 7-2 victory over Ineos Britannia, successfully defending the America’s Cup. The Kiwis claimed the world’s oldest international sporting trophy for the third time in a row, finishing 37 seconds ahead of their British rivals in the ninth race off Barcelona to wrap up the best-of-13 series.
On Sunday, New Zealand achieved a stunning eight-wicket win against India in Bengaluru, marking their first Test cricket victory on Indian soil in 36 years.
Later that same day, Amelia Kerr delivered an outstanding all-round performance, leading New Zealand to their first Women’s T20 World Cup title with a 32-run win over South Africa in Dubai.
Adding to the excitement, the New Zealand netball team secured a decisive 64-50 victory over world champions Australia in Wellington, prompting discussions among many Kiwis about whether the country has ever experienced a weekend quite like this.
“Was it the best weekend for NZ sport ever?” questioned Radio New Zealand.
Presenter Jesse Mulligan remarked, “It’s been a golden 48 hours for New Zealand sport.”
Bonnie Jansen, a reporter for the New Zealand Herald, noted, “On a weekend without the All Blacks, Warriors (rugby league), or the Olympics, other Kiwi athletes truly shone on the world stage.”
The Herald even conducted a poll asking readers to share their highlights, including Auckland FC’s win in their A-League debut and Liam Lawson’s ninth-place finish in Formula One in Austin, Texas. The T20 World Cup victory topped the poll with 33% of the votes, followed by the America’s Cup win and the Test victory in India.
