Blinken Urges Immediate Gaza Ceasefire During Middle East Tour

"Top US Diplomat Blinken Concludes Middle East Tour with Appeal for Gaza Ceasefire"

On August 20, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken concluded his Middle East tour with an urgent call for a Gaza ceasefire. This visit marks Blinken’s ninth regional trip since the Israel-Hamas conflict began 10 months ago.

DOHA-During his brief stop in Doha, Blinken expressed the need for immediate action to secure a truce, urging Hamas to accept a “bridging proposal” which Israel has already agreed to. He emphasized the importance of finalizing the deal quickly.

Blinken’s visit to Qatar was cut short as he was unable to meet with Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani due to the emir’s illness. Instead, Blinken met with Qatari officials to discuss mediation efforts.

In Egypt, Blinken discussed the situation with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who called for an end to the ongoing conflict and warned of regional escalation.

The conflict has already seen significant casualties, with recent Israeli strikes in Gaza causing further deaths and damage. The main obstacles to a ceasefire include Hamas’s demand for a complete Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza, which Israel has rejected.

Amid rising tensions and ongoing violence, Blinken and other mediators are working to avert a wider regional conflict involving Iran and Hezbollah.
