Wheat Prices Drop Rs2.50 After Transport Strike Ends

Nationwide Strike Ends, Sending Wheat Prices Lower in Markets

ISLAMABAD: (Finance Reporter) – Wheat prices fell by Rs2.50 per kilogram on Monday after goods transporters called off their nationwide strike, easing concerns over supply disruptions.

Flour Mills Association Sindh Zone Chairman Abdul Junaid Aziz said wheat prices in local markets had declined from Rs123 to Rs120.50 per kilogram following the end of the transporters’ strike.

Aziz said the reduction in wheat prices was directly linked to the resumption of goods transportation. He also clarified that flour millers were not responsible for the earlier increase in wheat prices.

According to Aziz, the ex-mill price of No. 2.5 flour is currently Rs130 per kilogram, while fine flour is being sold in the market at around Rs145 per kilogram.

The development came a day after goods transporters announced that they would suspend their nationwide strike for 40 days in what they described as the “broader national interest.”

Transporters had launched plans for a countrywide wheel-jam strike from August 8 after negotiations with the government failed to resolve their concerns, including the daily fixing of petrol and diesel prices.

The suspension of the strike has helped restore the movement of goods across the country and contributed to a decline in wheat prices.
