ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – WhatsApp is preparing for major changes in 2026 as it shifts from a simple messaging service toward a more complete social media-style platform, according to media reports.
The upcoming updates are designed to enhance user interaction beyond traditional chats, allowing people to share photos, videos, and other content in more dynamic ways.
One of the key additions is a username-based system, which will let users connect without sharing phone numbers. The feature is expected to improve privacy and make it easier to interact with new contacts, similar to other social platforms.

The Status feature is also set for a major upgrade, with options such as music integration, reactions, and interactive tools like “Add Yours,” making it more engaging and social in nature.
In addition, the “About” section may evolve into a short-form update tool where posts disappear after 24 hours, further aligning the app with modern social media trends.
Other expected features include customizable chat themes, improved sticker recommendations, channel subscription options, and AI-powered tools for writing messages and editing images.
Owned by Meta Platforms, WhatsApp is reportedly aiming to make the platform more interactive and engaging. However, some users have expressed concern that these changes could reduce the app’s simplicity, which has long been one of its main strengths.
