Secretary Information Highlights Role of Press Freedom and Journalists in Gilgit Event

SKARDU: (News Desk) – Caretaker Information Minister Ghulam Abbas has said that the concept of democracy cannot be complete without ensuring freedom of the press.

In a special message on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, he stated that a free, responsible, and impartial media forms the backbone of any democratic society. He paid tribute to journalists who sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of truth and emphasized that they never compromised on journalistic integrity.

The minister highlighted that journalism is not merely a profession but a public trust. He reiterated that the caretaker government fully supports freedom of expression and is committed to providing protection and assistance to media workers, ensuring they can perform their duties without fear or pressure.

Referring to modern challenges, he noted that while information technology has improved access to news, the spread of fake news and propaganda has made responsible journalism more difficult. He urged journalists to prioritize accuracy, balance, and national interest, stressing that fact-based reporting is essential for positive social change.

He further said that the government is taking serious steps for the welfare, safety, and rights of journalists across the country. The minister also praised the dedication of media professionals, acknowledging their continued commitment to truth even in difficult circumstances.

Press Freedom Day Observed in Gilgit with Call for Responsible Journalism and Media Support

A dignified ceremony was held at the Gilgit Press Club to mark World Press Freedom Day, attended by Secretary Information Gilgit-Baltistan Rehman Shah as the chief guest. A large number of journalists, media representatives, and officials from relevant departments participated in the event.

Addressing the ceremony, Secretary Information Rehman Shah said that World Press Freedom Day represents a reaffirmation of commitment to truth, development, and the promotion of a stable society. He praised journalists for playing a frontline role in highlighting truth under challenging conditions, saying that they are “fighting battles through the power of their pen.”

He particularly appreciated the services of journalists in remote and sensitive regions like Gilgit-Baltistan, stating that despite limited resources, they continue to uphold journalistic values and bring factual reporting to the public. He emphasized that journalism is the fourth pillar of the state and essential for a civilized society.

Rehman Shah further stated that journalists act as mirrors of society and their constructive criticism helps in social reform. He assured that the Information Department will take serious steps to address journalists’ issues, including advancing policies related to media welfare, digital media regulations, and endowment funds.

He also stressed the need to identify and counter negative trends in media, urging journalists to promote harmony and peace through responsible reporting.

Deputy Director Information Farooq Ahmed Khan, in his remarks, said that press freedom is the foundation of a democratic society and responsible journalism ensures stability. He acknowledged the challenges faced by journalists while appreciating their continued contributions.

Speaking on the occasion, President Gilgit Press Club Tahir Rana, President GB Newspapers Society Tariq Hussain Shah, representatives of journalists’ unions, and other media leaders emphasized that independent and ethical journalism remains key to a healthy society. They reiterated their commitment to continue truthful reporting despite pressures.

The event concluded with an exchange of shields among guests and a tribute to the services of the journalistic community.
