UK Orders Google To Offer AI Content Opt-Out

Publishers Win Right To Opt Out Of Google AI Search

NEW YORK: (Web Desk) – The Competition and Markets Authority has directed Google to allow website publishers in the United Kingdom to opt out of having their content used in AI-powered search features. The regulator described the decision as a “world first,” marking a significant step in how artificial intelligence interacts with online publishing.

The move comes amid growing complaints from media organisations and publishers who argue that AI systems use their content without proper compensation. They also warn that AI-generated summaries reduce user clicks to original websites, leading to declining traffic and advertising revenue.

Under the new guidance, Google must also ensure that publisher content is clearly attributed with visible links when used in AI-generated search results. The CMA said the rules are intended to create a fairer digital environment for both publishers and consumers.

Google responded by stating it is testing new tools that will allow website owners to control how their content appears in generative AI search features. However, the company cautioned that opting out of AI summaries may also reduce traffic and visibility for those sites.

The regulator had previously designated Google with “strategic market status,” giving it enhanced oversight powers due to its dominant role in online search. Officials said rapid changes like AI Overviews are reshaping how users access information, making stronger safeguards for publishers increasingly necessary.
