ISLAMABAD: The ongoing negotiations between the government and opposition have gained significant traction, with the third round of talks now scheduled for January 16. The discussions are expected to play a pivotal role in resolving the political deadlock.
Initially set for January 15, the meeting date was rescheduled by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, who responded to a request from committee members. The session will take place at 11 am in the Constitution Room of the Parliament House.
In a breakthrough development, the doors of Adiala Jail were opened on Sunday, allowing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) negotiation committee to meet with the party’s founder, Imran Khan. During the meeting, the PTI committee discussed the continuation of talks and outlined their demands for the upcoming session.
According to Sahibzada Hamid Raza, spokesperson for the opposition’s negotiation team, PTI’s demands will be formally presented in writing at the January 16 meeting. The party’s founder, Imran Khan, has reportedly approved the continuation of talks and emphasized two major demands:
- The release of all political prisoners, including Imran Khan himself.
- The formation of a judicial commission to investigate the incidents of May 9, 2023, and November 26, 2024.
The PTI negotiation committee also made it clear that progress in the talks is contingent upon the establishment of the judicial commission, following their meeting with Imran Khan in Adiala Jail.
