Heavy Coffee Consumption May Increase Heart Risk in Hypertension

ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – High blood pressure is often referred to as the “silent killer” because it can gradually damage the heart and blood vessels without obvious symptoms. While coffee is a common daily habit for many people, new research suggests that high consumption may increase risks for individuals with severe hypertension.

A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association analyzed health data from more than 18,000 Japanese adults aged 40 to 79 to examine the relationship between coffee intake and cardiovascular outcomes.

The findings indicate that among individuals with severe hypertension — defined as blood pressure readings of 160/100 mm Hg or higher — drinking two or more cups of coffee per day was associated with a significantly higher risk of death from heart disease compared to non-coffee drinkers.

However, the study also noted that moderate consumption, defined as up to one cup per day, did not show the same increased risk, suggesting that limited intake may be safer for people with high blood pressure.

Researchers also examined green tea consumption and found no increased risk of heart-related death, even among participants with severe hypertension. Scientists attribute this to green tea’s high levels of polyphenols, which are known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that support cardiovascular health.

Experts explain that while moderate caffeine intake may offer some general health benefits, excessive consumption can temporarily raise heart rate and blood pressure, placing additional strain on an already weakened cardiovascular system.

Medical professionals continue to emphasize that managing hypertension requires a combination of prescribed medication, regular physical activity, and a balanced diet. The study suggests that individuals with severe hypertension may benefit from limiting coffee intake to one cup per day or opting for alternatives such as green tea.
