Stokes Returns with Wicket Amid England Selection Debate

Ben Stokes Makes Positive Return for Durham

Islamabad: (Web Desk) Dropped England captain Ben Stokes marked his return to competitive cricket by claiming a wicket for Durham during their County Championship clash against Northamptonshire on Friday.

Stokes, along with England teammate Gus Atkinson, was left out of the second Test against New Zealand after reportedly breaching a team curfew while celebrating England’s victory in the opening Test at Lord’s. The decision sparked widespread speculation about Stokes’ future as England captain and his long-term international career.

Despite the uncertainty, reports suggest the experienced all-rounder could make a swift return to the national side for the third and final Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge next week.

Playing for Durham at Chester-le-Street, Stokes received a warm reception from supporters as he returned to action. He was introduced as the first-change bowler and nearly enjoyed an early breakthrough when Ricardo Vasconcelos offered a chance that was dropped at leg slip.

Vasconcelos capitalized on the missed opportunity, finishing the day unbeaten on 181 as Northamptonshire closed on 388-6. However, Stokes eventually made his mark by dismissing George Bartlett for 30, ending with figures of 1-60 from 18 overs.

Durham chief executive Tim Bostock backed Stokes and expressed hope that the England star would soon return to international duty. He said cricket fans would want to see Stokes continue leading the national team and urged authorities to avoid imposing a severe punishment.

Bostock also dismissed concerns over the player’s mental well-being, insisting Stokes remained positive and focused despite the controversy surrounding his omission.

Elsewhere, fast bowler Gus Atkinson impressed for Surrey, taking 2-33 from 15 overs as Glamorgan reached 244-6 at stumps in Cardiff.
