Modi Putin Meeting Delhi Begins Ahead Of Major BRICS Summit

Modi – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – The Modi Putin meeting Delhi started on Friday, marking the second sit-down between the two leaders in just two weeks. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin to New Delhi for talks that both sides call important for their long friendship.

This meeting comes just one day before the BRICS summit opens in the same city. World leaders including China’s Xi Jinping and Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian are also expected to join the summit, making this a busy and important week for Indian diplomacy.

According to sources close to the talks, Modi and Putin plan to discuss several key areas. These include civil nuclear energy, fertilisers, defence equipment, critical minerals, manufacturing, railways, and steel production. Both countries see these sectors as ways to grow their economic bond further.

This is not the first time the two leaders have met recently. They also spoke at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on August 31. During that meeting, Modi shared his view that the war in Ukraine must end for the sake of humanity. He told Putin that India stands ready to support any peace effort that could stop the fighting.

India’s ties with Russia have grown stronger in recent years, especially around oil trade. Along with China, India remains one of the top buyers of Russian oil. Experts say this oil trade helps Russia earn money for its budget, even as Western countries continue to impose sanctions due to the Ukraine war.

Despite pressure from Western nations, India has held its ground. Officials say the country’s huge population and growing economy need steady, affordable, and reliable energy sources. India has also made clear that talks and diplomacy, not trade bans, are the right path to end the Ukraine conflict.

Numbers show just how much India depends on Russian oil today. In July, Russia’s share of India’s crude oil imports hit a record 51 percent. This jump happened partly because of supply problems in the Middle East, which pushed Indian refiners to rely more heavily on Russian oil.

However, that share may have dropped slightly in August. Indian media reports suggest China increased its own Russian oil purchases during that month, which could have shifted some of the supply away from India.

This is not Putin’s first trip to India either. He visited in December 2025 for the annual India-Russia summit. During that visit, both nations agreed to expand cooperation in trade and defence, laying the groundwork for today’s discussions.

As the Modi Putin meeting Delhi continues, many are watching closely to see what new agreements or announcements come out of these high-level talks, especially with the BRICS summit set to begin right after.
