Lahore traffic police launch crackdown on unsafe school transport

CTO Directs Action Against Dangerous Practices in School Transport

LAHORE: (Staff Reporter) – Lahore Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi has ordered strict enforcement against overloading and the use of LPG cylinders in vehicles carrying schoolchildren.

According to a statement issued Saturday, the CTO directed traffic officials to ensure that school vans, rickshaws and buses transporting children do not use LPG cylinders, citing the safety of young passengers as a priority.

He also instructed authorities to take action against rickshaw drivers who allow children to sit on the front seat. Drivers have further been barred from hanging schoolbags or other belongings on the sides of rickshaws.

The CTO said passengers would also not be allowed to occupy the front seat of rickshaws operating along Canal Road.

Under the new directives, pickup drivers can carry only one passenger on the front seat. Traffic officials have been instructed to strictly monitor compliance and take action against violations.

Shirazi also directed DSPs and the Education Unit to raise awareness among school administrations and parents about traffic rules and safe transportation practices.

He urged parents to play their part by ensuring that their children travel through safe and legally compliant modes of transport.
