The District Education Authority launched a crackdown against unregistered schools and academies across Lahore two days earlier. Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat Khan said registration was mandatory for all educational institutions under the Punjab Private Educational Institution Ordinance 1984.

School administrations were directed to respond to notices within three days. Authorities said unregistered institutions could face fines ranging from Rs300,000 to Rs4 million under applicable laws.

The education department also stated that a fitness certificate is compulsory for schools and academies, warning that institutions operating without the certificate could be sealed.
