Just Minutes Of Vigorous Activity Boost Health

Short Daily Bursts Of Intense Activity Reduce Major Disease Risk

ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – Just a few minutes of vigorous movement each day — such as climbing stairs, brisk walking, or short bursts of running — may significantly reduce the risk of serious illnesses, including dementia, diabetes, and heart disease, according to a new study.

The research, published in the European Heart Journal, tracked nearly 96,000 adults over seven years to examine whether short, intense periods of activity embedded in daily life could protect against major health conditions, even without structured exercise routines.

Participants’ physical activity was monitored for one week, and their health outcomes were followed over seven years. Researchers recorded the onset of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, inflammatory disorders, liver and kidney disease, respiratory illnesses, and dementia, among other conditions.

The study found that even brief bursts of vigorous activity were associated with significantly lower risks of developing chronic illnesses and premature death. Specifically, researchers reported a 63% reduction in dementia risk, a 60% lower risk of diabetes, and up to a 46% decrease in the risk of early death.

The protective effects were particularly strong for inflammation-related conditions, severe cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes, and neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia. Certain conditions, such as joint-related inflammatory disorders, appeared to benefit especially from short, high-intensity movement.

These findings underscore that incorporating small amounts of vigorous activity into everyday life can provide substantial health benefits, even for people who do not follow formal exercise programs.
